Description
It was one of those nights you will never forget. My family was with me, we had just finished a sweltering afternoon hike out to fallen arch and had a light picnic at Devils Garden and a short walk through Devils Garden just around sunset. We saw a heard of blacktail deer on our way back to the car. As we drove out of the park, there was still plenty of light in the west to shoot warmly lit scenes, but the attention grabber was this cloudy moonrise over the back side of Skyline Arch. Both Sand Dune and Skyline arches are parts of rockly outcrops that were turned vertical by geological forces and eroded to form mini slot canyons. This shot is looking due east straight into the fins. My daughter was busy facing west shooting the last of a storm system by fading warm sunlight. I decided to set up my tripod and fire off a few shots of the moon. I had to careful to walk the line between getting the exposure right for the foreground and not completely blowing out the moon. I know it is easy to take two shots and put it together in Photoshop, but I like to get it right in camera.
