Description
Sunset on a summer day in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Since I was in Colorado with my family, I really didn't have the time I would normally devote to landscape photography that I would normally. Our teenage girls are more than mature enough to leave at the hotel for a few hours, so my wife and I went into the park just before sunset last July.
We had spotted this view earlier in the day and figured it might be a good sunset spot. We didn't want to venture too far that night because we had an Ice Cream date with the girls later that evening. I noticed the storm clouds moving over the range and broke out my tripod and long lens. It took about 230MM of my 100-400 to frame this image up just right. There are a few other from the same area on different evening that are much wider with foreground interest, but tonight, it was all about the golden light hitting those mountains.
Like so many of my pictures, this one is special to me as much for what happened before and after the image. There are too many stories just about this evening to tell here, but my favorite one is when we asked the Ranger at the National Park campground to take a quick tour of the grounds to scout for a future trip and happened upon a youth group all using Marmot tents. We became so impressed with how they looks and their quality that we decided we wanted to buy one. First a Marmot tee shirt showed up under the Christmas Tree, then a few weeks later, our 3P backpacking tent got here (Thanks Amazon) Unfortunately COVID-19 has put a temporary stop to any backpacking trips this Spring, but I know that every time we pitch that tent, we will go back to this beautiful evening in Colorado.
