Description
By the summer of 2017, we were having quite the year. My wife had suffered from bilateral leg fractures the year before. One week before this trip to Utah, she rolled her ankle again and needed several weeks of rest before she could travel. My daughter had been in the hospital in May and was still needing outpatient care. With all this we were still lucky to know that this was all just a speed bump in life.
My wife has always been very supportive of my photography. She insisted my younger daughter and I fly out as scheduled and she and my older daughter would join us later in the week.
This image was taken on our first full day in Utah. We had driven out to Goblin Valley in the morning. It was about 100 degrees so mid day hiking in the valley was slow and a bit uncomfortable. As we waited for the sun to go down and for the temperature to go from broil to bake I was able to just slow down and let go for the first time in almost a year.
As the sun slowly set, I felt myself finally relaxing. By the time the afternoon gave way to golden hour and faded into blue hour, I had been back in my happy place. That wonderful feeling you get when you realize you are doing in that moment the one thing you were hard wired to do.
We have all left a bit of our creative soul on the table to make way for our families, friends and the future. The images in this series will always take me back to that wonderful evening in Utah when I got a chance to both take a breath from the challenges of the last year and learn how smart, wise and creative my younger daughter really is.
I think that ultimately, this is the real definition of photography. Photography is that amazing, expensive, frustrating, humiliating and exhilarating passion that lets us capture moments in time that transcend the image in the frame. What we see in an image is but the start of or the end of a rich, textured story. Sometimes that story is only known to the artist, sometimes the whole world knows it.
